THE BIG PICTURE
Symmetry, depth, perspective- all words one might associate with a painting more than an improv performance, yet these elements are what make up our world, and are what the audience see when they watch your show. The images we present to the audience affect how they interpret our work, while the physical choreography informs everything from a character's emotional perspective, to the action of the scene itself. In this workshop, we will explore how the content of each scene can inform its physical presentation and work with levels and body positioning, distance, stage craft and alternative performance spaces to build scenes that are vibrant, multi-dimensional and expressive. Go beyond space work to unlock the beautiful work of art inside your scene

STORYTELLING AND IMAGINATION

Storytelling and imagination is a workshop whose goal is to make our work on stage deeper and more complete. When we are on stage, we are looking for something that can move the scene forward - short form or long form. In this workshop we'll look at different perspectives on storytelling, dramaturgy and imagination as tools to develop your scenes so they feel rich and interesting.

LISTENING
The workshops will be focused on the importance of listening and paying attention to everything. Mostly, we will be learning using two-person scenes.

THE SCENE’S FULL POTENTIAL
In this workshop we are going to work on tools that will help you find the scene´s full potential. We are going to examine how we can stay connected with our fellow improvisers on stage. How we can create an electric charge between the characters that will help us stay in our bodies and play the situation. We will work on multi-layered dialogues where, while you play the situation, you also examine the history the characters have together and the characters' dreams and wishes. We will work on how we can use the stage to make the scene more interesting.

NAVARASAS
The nine human emotions of the Indian aesthetic theory
Mad, sad, glad and afraid - this is how we generally characterize everyday emotions. This is limited and skewed towards "negative" emotions. And there have to be more positive emotions out there, right? What would it be like to embody emotions like Heroism or Wonder or Peace or Compassion? Learn the ancient Indian system of Navarasas (Nava - 9; rasas - emotions) and bring a whole new array of characters to life on stage.

GENDER/GENRE
Many genres have gendered characters created to reflect the attitudes and behaviours society expected at that time. Today’s society is quite different. Gender is no longer a static, singular, or predetermined concept. In this workshop, we ask the question; can we remain true to the genres story and true to today’s gender expression?

THE STOCKHOLM SYNDROME
The Stockholm syndrome is a workshop inspired by the Swedish playwright Lars Norén, famous for his dark portraits of dysfunctional families. At Stockholms Improvisationsteater we have played this show for ten seasons for an excited audience. This work is an experiment, an attempt to push the boundaries of improv. How much dark drama can an audience and the improvisers handle? Is there even a limit? Awkward silences, tension, monologues that don´t fit in are some of the ingredients of this workshop. We will use technics to make it more theatrical, moving as if we were directed/choreographed. I encourage you to bring your own personal experiences all the way into this work. Of course there will be fun and laughter, but we will do our best to reach the uncomfortable situations, the dark side of family and people's inner fear. Please join me on the journey to hell!

THE DEPTH OF THE MINIMUM
The Depth of the Minimum is a workshop based on the research that the director, Sergio Paris, has carried out over the last 17 years from his show Improvisaciones Mínimas.
Realistic improvisation will be worked on every day, and the goal is to go much deeper, profoundly in the art of the actor-improviser. We will seek to discover and train the different platforms on which the improvisations are built and how the relationship of the characters are the axis of the improvisation. Leaving conflict and the competition in the background to give priority to the story and the relationships.

LET'S PLAY SERIOUSLY

We all talk about having fun on stage, but what does that really mean? When you are genuinely having fun, you are captivating to watch. As children, we play uninhibitedly and constantly invent new stories without fearing failure. By allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, and to be “in the shit”, we release our inner child and delight our audience. In this workshop we will use applied clowning and physical theatre techniques to bring pure joy into our improv. You will learn how to surprise yourself, and by removing the pressure to be funny you will truly be able to play…seriously. Clowns don’t have a history and they experience everything for the first time and we want our audiences to have that same sense of wonder when they watch us perform. If we can achieve that sense of pure unadulterated play on stage then the sky really is the limit.

STORY, STORY, LIVE!
First and foremost, improvisers tell stories. Whether it’s a short scene, a long-form, funny, dramatic, or even if you have no idea what you’re doing, what stays with the audience is the stories we tell onstage. And where better to learn this skill than from the art of storytelling itself? In this workshop, we explore the skills required to be a good storyteller and how they help us become better improvisers.
